Monday afternoon, the Knox County Health Department (KCHD) held their first press briefing since the Board of Health passed the face mask requirement. During the briefing, KCHD Director Martha Buchanan addressed how the Board of Health plans to enforce the new requirement.
“The intent is to issue warnings and if possible provide facemasks to those who don’t have one,” Buchanan explained. “Additionally, per item number 11 in the order, the board has formally requested local governments to support the enforcement, explanations, and clarifications of the regulation.”
Buchanan’s comments come after Knox County Sheriff Tom Spanlger said “There are serious questions as to the constitutionality of the order made by the health board. My Deputies are sworn to support and defend the constitution. We will rely on the citizens of this community to protect themselves and others in the manner they find appropriate.”
The mask order went into effect on Friday, July 3rd.
