A Knoxville man is facing several charges after what started as a road rage incident ended in a rollover crash on I-40, according to a police report obtained by WVLT News.
Just before midnight on Feb. 23, a Tennessee Highway Patrol trooper said he was on the scene of a traffic stop on I-40 East near mile marker 396 when he noticed two cars speeding toward his patrol car.
According to court records, the trooper said a Nissan Altima being driven by James Pappageorge drove onto the shoulder behind his patrol car in an attempt to run the other car, a Hyundai Sonata, off the roadway before speeding past and nearly hitting the patrol car.
The Hyundai stopped behind the trooper, and the three people inside explained that Pappageorge had been involved in a crash with them and that it turned into road rage.
The trooper said Pappageorge then lost control while trying to pass a tractor-trailer and a Lincoln Navigator about a mile down the road. Troopers said the Nissan hit the Lincoln and ended up on its roof.
Troopers then spoke with Pappageorge, who had a strong odor of alcohol on his breath and bloodshot, watery eyes and slurred speech, police said. According to records, Pappageorge had a suspended license and wasn’t wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
An investigation determined that an altercation happened at a gas station on Asheville Highway, which led to Pappageorge chasing the Hyundai onto I-40 and intentionally trying to run it off the roadway.
Pappageorge was taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center for treatment of injuries sustained in the crash. Additionally, two people in the Lincoln were taken to LeConte Medical Center for minor injuries.
Pappageorge is facing more than a dozen charges, including numerous counts of reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon, aggravated assault and DUI.
