Woman Dies after Tent Catches Fire in Townsend, Sheriff’s Office Says

Townsend, TN (WOKI) A woman has died after the tent in which she was living in Townsend caught on fire Monday.

Officials with the Blount County Sheriff’s Office say when deputies arrived on scene, the fire department was helping the tent owner, Julie Whetstone who had burns on her upper body.

BCSO says deputies spoke with a witness who said she was driving her son to his girlfriend’s house when they saw Whetstone walk out of her tent on fire.

The son said he tried to get Whetstone to lay on her back to put the fire out but she wouldn’t listen. He ran to his girlfriend’s camper and used a blanket to pat out the flames.

Whetstone’s daughter said she was with her mom before it happened and that her mom used a leaky can with kerosene in it to get the fire going in her wood burning stove.

The daughter also said she set up a propane heater for her mom before she left.

Whetstone was airlifted to UT Medical Center where she later died Tuesday morning.
